Reading Program Intern

Mission: Coalition for Refugees from Burma (CRB) promotes the self-sufficiency of all resettled refugees by helping them access services and educational opportunities, while preserving traditional customs. We seek to transform refugees to become advocates of our community, and to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate humanitarian and social support services to improve the living conditions and quality of life for resettled refugees.

Scope of Work: Over the past eleven years, CRB has partnered with the Kent School District (KSD) to offer educational enrichment programs to refugee and newcomer students. Specifically, our Reading Program hosts after-school classes four days a week for elementary school-age students. Our intern will work remotely to help develop a curriculum for this program, lead after-school classes, and receive professional development training around equity and cultural humility.

  • Develop an educational curriculum for weekly after-school classes

  • Lead after-school class at least once a week

  • Track and monitor student attendance and progress

  • Assist the Program Coordinator with volunteer management

  • Participate in weekly professional development around topics like equity and cultural humility

  • Experience working in education or with young students

  • Cross-cultural awareness

  • Ability to speak a language other than English is encouraged but not required

  • Willingness to learn

Schedule: This is a paid internship that requires a commitment of 12-15 hours per week for at least three months, with the opportunity for six months upon intern performance and interest. The Reading Program Intern will start on March 8, 2021.

Our direct service includes virtual after-school classes Mondays through Thursdays from 4 to 5 pm. We currently have one in-person class on Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. We want our intern to commit to attending regularly and help lead at least one after-school class a week. Please note that this schedule is subject to change given developments with the COVID-19 pandemic and local regulations.
